BANDLI SANCTUARY

Location: 7-km from Sunder Nagar Town, Mandi DistrictWildlife in Himachal

This sanctuary is situated in district Mandi and is 7-kms away from Sunder Nagar Town. It is heavily disturbed sanctuary with a small population of Chir pheasant and Leopard. The area was earlier a protected forest. Other wildlife found over here includes Himalayan Black Bear, common Palm Civet, Barking Deer, Goral, Indian hare, Rhesus Macaque

HOW TO GET THERE

Air: The nearest airport is Bhuntar about 57 km from Mandi.
Rail: The broad gauge railhead is at Pathankot, a distance of 210-km. From Pathankot the narrow gauge railway connects Joginder Nagar, which is 55-km from Mandi.
Road: Mandi is well connected by road to other places. The main bus stand is just above an open playing field, where the National Highway- 21 continues along the left bank of river to Pandoh.

PLACES TO STAY

The town has many hotels but the place to stay is ramshackle Raj Mahal, overlooking the Town Square is a period-furnished palace with a good restaurant. For a bit more comfort try Evening Plaza, Vyas GuestHouse and the Arayan Bung.


CHURDHAR SANCTUARY


Location: Solan Valley, Shimla District
Area: 56.15-km.

Churdhar peak, with height of 3,647m, is the highest peak in outer Himalayas. It is like an Oasis of Alpine area in an ocean of temperate forests. The view from Churdhar peak is un-paralled. The sanctuary got its name from the Chur Peak, on the top of which sits a majestic status of Lord Shiva. One is sure to come across a large number of multi-coloured and agile Monals in the adjoining forests.

The total covered area of this sanctuary is 5616 hectares and this is notified on 15th November 1985. This is one of the newest sanctuaries of the State. Now at the point of local extinction, Churdhar still contains good habitat for Monals and other pheasants. Other fauna includes Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Common Langur and Leopards but Musk Deer has been severely depleted by hunting.

TREKKING


This is an excellent area for trekking during summer and early winters. Trekking from Nohra, Sarain and Pulbahal are tough but enjoyable.

Air: The Jubbarhatti airport is 23-km from Shimla and major domestic airlines cater their services from here to Shimla . One can catch direct flights from Delhi .

Rail: Shimla has a narrow gauge railway line on which toy train runs from Kalka to Shimla. The train cruises its way through valleys and beautiful landscapes at a very slow pace making the journey very pleasant. From Kalka one can take trains to other parts of the country. The Toy train from Shimla is of two types- one is the normal multi coach train and the other is the single car train, which has a glass roof giving an enthralling experience during the journey.

DARANGHATI SANCTUARY

Daranghati sanctuary located in the upper area of Shimla District, has undisturbed forest area with plenty of wildlife and was notified on 27th March 1974. The total covered area of this sanctuary is 16740 hectares.

Himalayan Black Bear, Brown Bear, Himalayan Palm Civet, Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Flying Fox, Goral, Indian Hare, Stripped Hyena, Himalayan Ibex, Leopard, Himalayan yellow throated Marten, Serow, Blue Sheep, Common giant flying Squirrel and Himalayan Weasel are the animals that are founf over here.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary


Introduction :

Surrounded by dense pine and spruce forests and with a view of the snow capped Pir Panjal Range, and the velvety meadow of Khajjiar, the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is a gem of a tourist destination by its own right. Kalatop falls on the way to Dalhousie from Chamba and Jot. Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary


Location of Jaldapara

The Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary is situated at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas and on the bank of river Torsa in West Bengal. The vast grassland with patches of riverine forests, was declared a sanctuary in 1943 for protection of the great variety flora and fauna. Principle among them is the Asiatic one horned Rhino. The Jaldapara sanctuary is a mixture of a mosaic of woods, grassland, swamps and streams.

The main attraction in Jaldapara apart form its exquisite natural beauty, is the Asiatic one horned rhino. The Jaldapara sanctuary holds the maximum number of rhino population in India after Kajiranga National Park in Assam. Toto Para is the only settlement for the Totos, one of the most endangered ethnic communities in the world. Their numbers are now reduced to mere a thousand. Lot of initiatives has been taken by the governmental and non-governmental agencies for the uplifting their living condition. However, to live with them and to observe their traditional cultures can still be a precious experience. Hidden deep inside the Chilapata Forests the ruins of a thousand yeas old fort of Nal King has a tremendous historical and archeological importance. Built in the 5th century during the Gupta Empire the ruins still recall the memories of the Golden Age. Because the site is not maintained properly, it has now become the play ground for leopards, snakes and other animals. Other destinations of Dooars can also be visited from Jaldapara on a day trip.

Accomodation for the tourists visiting Jaldapara is arranged in the Madarihat tourist bungalow or Holong tourist lodge. The Holong lodge is inside the forest and is preferred over Madarihat Bungalow which is on the forest fringe. The Pong Lake Sanctuary


The Pong Lake Sanctuary covering an area of 9675 sq km is situated in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The 'Pong Dam Reservoir' got recognition as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1983. Over 225 species of bird hailing from 54 families have been sighted around the lake and on the surrounding mud-banks. The majestic Dhauladhar mountains form the backdrop to the serene lake. Commercial fishing is widely practiced in the Pong Dam reservoir.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary


Location: Chail Sanctuary is located in Chail town of Himachal Pradesh.
Major wildlife species - Goral, Red Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Sambar and Flying Squirrel.

A Glance on Chail Sanctuary

Spread in an area of more than 110 sq. kms, at the foothills of mighty Himalayas, Chail Sanctuary encompasses a vast forest cover. In 1976, Chail wildlife sanctuary was identified and was declared as a protected area. Apart from its animals and birds, the main attraction of the sanctuary is the Chir Pheasant breeding farm. The Chir Pheasant breeding and rehabilitation programme has been started in 1988. Visitors can come to the Chir Pheasant Breeding centres situated at Blossom and Jhajja. The forests are mainly dense covers of Oak and Pine, apart from the other major grassland covers.

Floral Attractions
The forests in Chail sanctuary mainly comprises of Pine and Oak trees. The northern slopes are forested while southern slopes support grasslands, usually with patches of forest or scrub in the depressions. Grasslands are maintained by regular burning and cutting of plants. Rhododendron forms pure stands in places and Cedar and Blue Pine have been sown in some areas. There is little mature forest and much secondary growth in these areas. The forest is largely confined to the northern half of the sanctuary. The grassland of Sanctuary also has some small stretches of Pine, Oak, Cedar and Robinia.

Wildlife Attractions
Chail Sanctuary has mainly mammals in its area. The large mammals include rhesus macaque, leopard, Indian muntjac and goral crested porcupine. Other species include Himalayan black bear, wild boar, common langur, sambar, black-naped hare. European red deer was introduced half a century ago by the former Maharaja of Patiala but none was sighted during a census in 1988. The avian population comprises majorly of Chir pheasant and Kalij pheasant. The Chir breeding and rehabilitation centre has helped increase in number of Chir birds in the forests.

The Park Safari
The Chail sanctuary can be best viewed by the means of trekking, as the uneven land does not allow to take a jeep safari in the park. The forest officers also encourage trekking, so the animals and birds feel safe and secure.

PIN VALLEY NATIONAL PARK


Location: Pin Valley, Lahaul Spiti District
Area: 9,675-sq-km.
Speciality: Wooly Hare, Tibetan Gazelle & Snow Leopard
Best Season: April-June
This Pin Valley national park is situated in Lahual Spiti district. In this park there is a variety of rare animals such as wooly hare, Tibetan gazelle and snow Leopard. The entire area is a cold desert. It was declared National Park on 9th January 1987 and occupies an area of 67,500 hectares. Animals that are found in this sanctuary includes Red Indian Fox, Tibetan Gazelle, Wooley Hare, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Marmot, Himalayan Mouse-hare, Indian Hodgsoris Porcupine, Blue Sheep and Wolf. In this area visitors come across large herds of Ibex and Bharal. Snow leopards are also found in this park.

REQUIREMENT

Only those who have tough leg muscles and strong lungs can visit this area. Visitors can contact Divisional Forest Officer Wildlife Division Sarahan, Assistant Conservator of Forest Wildlife Kaza or Range Officer Wildlife Tabo for information about the park. The area is closed to foreign visitors. Indian visitors are also required to obtain a permit for entry from Deputy Commissioner Shimla or Sub Divisional Magistrate Rampur.

HOW TO GET THERE

Road: Lahaul is connected with road from all parts of the country. Manali is the point where buses from various stations come. From here, one can take bus/taxi to any destination in Lahaul-Spiti, Pangi & Leh during the months between June to November depending upon opening and closing of Rohtang pass, the gateway to this valley. National highway 21 passes through this valley enroute to Leh. Other two directions are from Shimla via the Spiti Valley, along the road, which runs up to the Tibetan border through Kinnaur and from Zanskar and Ladakh over the Shingo-La and Baralacha-La passes. The Shingo-La gives access to Lahul from Zanskar while the Baralacha La is on the Leh- Manali road and provides access to Lahul from Ladakh.
